Despite the questionable grammar of the
title of this entry the sentiment is valid. It is the case these days that
every site requiring a WCM system to author and manage can expect to deliver
content to different devices and that different users will consume different
'bits' of the content. This means that the authoring of this content needs to
be focussed on content objects, not pages. I know this is not a new idea and
some authors have criticised WCM software for not being suitable for this
object focus but I would argue that the software is in line with current
authoring paradigms. Authors do not yet think in anything other than pages, or
sometimes articles. Where there are business processes to create all the 'bits'
to deliver content fragments or to deliver to mobile devices for example, these
are properties, attributes or metadata values attached to pages or at least the
main body content of a page. Business processes do not drive authors to create
content that is truly separate from the presentation layer. This will require a
different understanding of content and a new application of the object
orientation tag. Or should that be conetnt orientation? Think mashup at an authoring level not just at consumption and
you get the idea. The presentation layer becomes an aggregator which might or might not be user defined. Designers will hate this. I believe this will happen in the future but, for now, it is
maybe a bit too 'conceptual'.
