Tomorrow's World?

23 October 2007 by Doug Imrie

It was my son's 13th birthday at the weekend and it got me thinking back to 1994 when as an expectant father I rented a pager (or beeper depending on where you are) so that I could be contacted when my partner went into labour (I got my first mobile phone free when I bought a new car 4 months later - and quickly zoomed off round to the pertrol station to pick up my free glasses, those were the days!). Whilst I obviously know they're still used in hospitals for example I was surprised, after a quick google, to discover that pagers are still widely available and demand is still high.

No need for a pager three years ago when my daughter was born as by that time I was carrying about the HTC 'Blue Angel'  which would have been probably my 7th or 8th mobile. I'm two mobiles further on now and just about to upgrade again to one with a built in GPS receiver. My how things have changed in the last decade or so, a phone that tells me where to go - mind you, I don't need a phone for that one with any number of people providing that service.

It does make me wonder what mobile communications will be like in tomorrow's world. My vote would go for the thumb phone where you'd have a speaker implanted in one thumb and a mic in the other with your fingers being sensors for the dialing numbers. Go on try it, phone someone using the thumb phone and you'll see how user friendly it would be. You could even have a video camera and screen in the palm of your hand for video calls. Even better for those who are thumb impaired, the mic could be implanted into the middle finger of their left hand. Just imagine all those people making a call on their way to work now.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with extra information? It is extremely useful for me.

Whether you are in the classroom or conference room, the sleek, contemporary design and rugged functionality of the 3M Overhead Projector Model 1711 means you can expand their minds without sacrificing your budget. An open singlet projection head makes the 3M Model 1711 easy to focus and clean, while 2,500 lumens of light ensure your image and message are clear - even when the room lights are on.

All I can say is keep it up.  This blog is so necessary in a time when everyone just wants to talk about how many people someones cheated on their wife with.  I mean, thanks for bringing intelligence back to the web, its been sorely missed.  Great stuff.  Please keep it coming!

Just found your blog on Yahoo. Great read. I would like to thank you for all of the good information. It is not easy to find good information these days. I have bookmarked this posting to check back for more info in the future. Excellent work!

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. It?s the old what goes around comes around routine.

Good read. I surely liked every bit of it. I have you bookmarked and will be reading more.

What you said made a lot of sense.  But, think about this, what if you added a little content?  I mean, I dont want to tell you how to run your blog, but what if you added something to maybe get peoples attention?  Just like a video or a picture or two to get people excited about what youve got to say.  In my opinion, it would make your blog come to life a little bit.

I cannot WAIT to read more of this.  I mean, you just know so much about this.  So much of it Ive never even thought of.  You sure did put a new twist on something that Ive heard so much about.  I dont believe Ive actually read anything that does this subject as good justice as you just did.

I was wondering if you ever considered changing the layout of your blog?  Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.  But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.  Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or two images.  Maybe you could space it out better?
